Simply put — China is in business with Africa. China has better and cheaper technology, man power, capacity, but most importantly they have the will to build things for Africa. Africa in turn pays for those with resources (like oil, commodities, bilateral relations that will be cashed in later, diplomatic relations, etc. and of course cash from time to time).

The difference between China’s business and Westerns’ “business” is China doesn’t do aid. And that is the biggest reason why the West is being a cry baby about China’s business in Africa. China is building infrastructure, technological advancements, mega projects.

The West is engaged in manipulation and subjugation of Africans with fake “aid” campaigns that never give any tangible outcome. Political and useless relationships are what the West always champions. But China is making an actual contribution that is quantifiable, tangible and useful for the people at large, and not just for politicians and their elites. Industrialization is what Africa needs and that is what China is providing. And no not because they’re saintly, it is only business at the end of the day. But it is good business, good option for Africa.

That is why the Western powers whine about this because their useless “aid” is being replaced by empowering and industrialization by the China.

They are trading resources for infrastructural buildings.

If they give a loan they are buying influence. No one helps anyone unless you are too naive to believe so.

China also needs Africa as much as Africa needs it. They desperately need oil and resources from African countries.

It won’t be long though, as if it becomes post-industrialised country African countries would have to seek a new market for their raw materials.

It seems thier economy would go down unless they quickly diversify it and set up their own manufacturing and packaging plants before china leaves the market.

Outstanding answer. I have been in Africa a few times and each visit revealed more and more Chinese business activities going on in different countries.

The west allowed NGO’s and the UN to make decisions about how to help in Africa and almost all of them failed. They failed because of people like Jeffrey Sachs who tested his economic ideas in small African villages and they did not work. Instead of simply doing business with Africans, Sachs, et al, try to show Africans how to do stuff. The Chinese are being much more intelligent with their approach.

Sachs, and the other NGO people, behave in a racist manner to Africans by assuming they don’t know how to do things and have to be trained. China has passed all that by and offers to make deals that satisfy both parties. No training, no smug sense of a white man’s burden being shouldered, no colonial bullshit, no happy talk on CNN.

I totally agree that China is not helping African nations. There is no friends in geopolitics. But there is only common interest. The terminologies friendship, allies, help, aid are all to gain interests. The sooner people realize this the better. We can replace “China” with any country and the statement still holds.

The West (which includes US, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and pretty much any other region you can think of with majority white folks) are quite frankly hypocritical of China’s geopolitics when the West themselves do plenty of harm anyway. The West does not invest much in terms of development of the native land but rather invest in their own personal gains at the expense of native lands suffering. However, China understands that business is business and it supports these economies to help them thrive and in the meantime, China benefits as well. It is a win win situation for China. Ultimately, the West cannot stand that a non white nation or region is thriving and doing extremely well because that will crumble the very fabric of western dominated modern history. They need to admit that currently, China’s business tactics are overall beneficial for Africa and the rest of the world that does business with them. The West pointing the finger at China is so hypocritical on so many levels.

You are right. China’s position is one of transactional trade and where needed provide flexible payment terms (naturals resources or IOY).

Make no mistake. China is running a economic development policy towards parts of Africa and make no mistake, true hospital, housing, infrastructure is being build by China, but China does nothing for free.

Obviously the initial development that China initiates is great for countries as it is aimed as improving average quality of life. China happens to have a lot of experience in that respect.

China trades with Africa because it sees strong potential in Africa. I think we’re all a bit sick of living in an unipolar world, and China is a bit too peculiar to be a true leader in a bi-polar world (as pointed out here, it’s interested in trade to make itself rich, not in setting an example in terms of ideology). I hope African nations can quickly catch up so they can form a new superpower in a new multipolar world.

Besides, I very much look forward to what Africa can bring in terms of cultural influence. Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr and Oprah Winfrey are all heirs to African culture, I suspect there’s treasure there that is more valuable than gold and oil.
